The European Union has taken another major step toward the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, known as ETIAS.
On September 7, 2026, the European Commission adopted a new implementing decision covering how data in the ETIAS Central System can be accessed, amended and erased. The decision took effect on September 28, 2026. EUR-Lex
ETIAS is designed for travelers from visa-exempt non-EU countries who plan to enter participating European countries for short stays.
Unlike a Schengen visa, ETIAS is a travel authorization rather than a traditional visa. Travelers who currently do not need a visa for short visits will be among those affected once the system becomes operational.
The European Commission says ETIAS is scheduled to begin in the last quarter of 2026, although an exact launch date has not yet been officially announced. Migration and Home Affairs
The new system will operate alongside the EU’s Entry/Exit System, or EES.
EES is already fully operational at external Schengen borders and records information including passport data, facial images and fingerprints for many non-EU travelers entering for short stays. Migration and Home Affairs
Travelers planning trips to Europe should therefore pay attention to official announcements over the coming months, especially those who currently benefit from visa-free travel.
