Pope Leo returned to the Vatican on Saturday after spending four days in hospital following surgery for lung cancer.
The 71-year-old pontiff left Rome’s Gemelli Hospital walking without assistance and appeared in good spirits as he greeted supporters before entering his vehicle.
Doctors said he had recovered sufficiently to resume normal daily activities. Reuters
The medical procedure involved removing the lower lobe of his right lung after doctors identified lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer.
According to his medical team, the operation was successful.
The Vatican has not released every detail about the extent of the disease, but doctors said they expect Leo to make a strong recovery. Reuters
The Cancer Was Discovered During a Routine Examination
One of the most striking details surrounding the diagnosis is that the cancer was reportedly detected incidentally during a routine medical examination.
This meant doctors were able to intervene before the condition caused a larger public health crisis for the pope.
His hospitalization nevertheless generated significant international attention because the health of a pope can directly affect the leadership of the global Catholic Church.
Pope Leo Is Already Returning to Work
Despite undergoing major surgery only days earlier, Leo has continued carrying out some responsibilities.
He spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by telephone and called for humanitarian measures related to the war in Ukraine.
He is also expected to resume public prayers from the Vatican. Reuters
What About His Upcoming Travel?
The Vatican has indicated that the pope still intends to maintain an important international schedule.
A major trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru is planned for November 6–17.
Whether doctors eventually recommend changes to that itinerary will depend on his recovery over the coming weeks. Reuters
Why the Story Is Drawing Attention
Papal health always generates international interest, but this case is particularly significant because Leo has been pope for only around a year and a half.
His quick return to the Vatican sends a message that he intends to continue working rather than substantially reduce his public responsibilities.
However, the diagnosis is likely to keep attention focused on his health as the Vatican approaches several important diplomatic and religious events.
