China’s Golden Week is shaping up to become one of the biggest travel periods of 2026, as millions of travelers prepare for longer holidays and increasingly ambitious international trips.
This year’s National Day holiday begins on October 1 and follows closely after the Mid-Autumn Festival, allowing many travelers to create extended breaks of up to 13 days. Travel agencies have reported particularly strong interest in long-haul destinations, with packages to Spain, Portugal, Northern Europe, Greece, the Balkans, Australia and Central Asia selling strongly ahead of the holiday. According to Trip.com data cited by Reuters, hotel bookings for stays of seven nights or longer have increased sharply compared with last year, while multi-destination itineraries are also becoming more popular. More than half of outbound flight bookings for the holiday period involve departures before October 1, and average trip duration has risen beyond nine days. Reuters
However, the travel boom does not necessarily mean tourists are spending freely.
Chinese consumers remain cautious because of broader economic pressures. Travelers are increasingly searching for value, and mid-range hotels are attracting more interest than luxury accommodation. A Dragon Trail International survey found that only a small share of respondents planned to choose luxury hotels, while mid-range properties were considerably more popular. Reuters
For destinations around the world, the trend is significant. Chinese outbound tourism has historically been an important source of revenue for airlines, hotels, restaurants and retailers.
The 2026 Golden Week period suggests that demand for international travel remains strong even when consumers become more careful about how much they spend.
For travelers themselves, increased demand can also mean higher airfares, limited hotel availability and busier tourist attractions. Anyone planning to travel during Golden Week should therefore book transportation and accommodation as early as possible.
